I'll be at an artist reception for the following show. Come join me and see my newest crown. -M.Lu VISUALIZING CHANGE: ARTISTS SPEAK OUT FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE IN ASBURY PARKAsbury Park, NJ - A group of 8 artists will present Visualizing Change: Artists Speak Out at Heaven Gallery from Saturday, April 28th through Mother's Day May 13th. Heaven Gallery is located at 721 Cookman Ave in Asbury Park, NJ. Opening reception with free refreshments is on April 28th from 7 pm - 10 pm.
A passion for social justice was the instigation of the show. Each artist has chosen an issue of social justice that has a personal meaning to them. Some works are in-your-face obvious and others are more nuanced, that will reward you on reflection. Mostly paintings, the show also includes unusual 3D work (a crown for Trayvon Martin) and even a small video art installation. The show reflects a return to the times when an artist's work was valued not for what price the work was sold, but for what the work had to say. Currently, there's a mood in the country, some might even say outrage, that in 2018 it's time to break the silence and to speak out on social issues. It promises to be a fresh and passionate experience, reflecting the current times. Issues portrayed include women's #metoo movement, gun violence, housing rights, black lives matter plus more. The group is thrilled to present in Asbury Park, which is becoming well known as an art destination on the Jersey Shore and especially at Heaven Gallery where owner Malcom Navias is known for his support of local artists. The artists in the show hail from Asbury Park and other NJ towns, Brooklyn, NY, and Austin, Texas. Artists in the show are Michelle Dillon, Nick DAlessio, Michael Donato, Rebecca Sanchez, Jordan Wason, Laura Marie Marciniak, Mary Lu Wason and Diona West.

We no longer expect pictures every single day..we've realized that all creating doesn't always translate into something that can be shown in a photo. But, we do stop in several times a week and get inspired and in turn, inspire each other. We look forward to seeing your work. Just wanted to thank those who came last night to my talk at the Atlantic Highlands Library. Thank you also to the staff there, especially Marilyn, for all their help and support with the exhibit and talk.
My rings are still on display there until Monday morning, so stop by if you haven't had the chance. Click here for more information. Everyone thought I should tape the talk and put it on uTube. I think I might just do that, possibly this weekend. I have some great news to share with you! On Tuesday, Dec. 6th, I will be speaking about my experience during the Ring a Day project. The talk will be at the Atlantic Highlands Library (temporary location is 48 Avenue C in the Fireman's Field clubhouse) at 7pm.
They have been kind enough to offer me space there for an exhibit of some of the rings I made, plus more recent work. You can stop by and see the exhibit during their open hours from December 1st (in the evening) through December 12th. Thank you to Atlantic Highlands Herald for recently publishing news of this event. See the article here. I spent the year of 2010 making a ring every day as part of a Flickr challenge group RAD2010. You can see all the rings I made through my page here. It was an exciting and inspiring year. I made online friends with jewelers all over the world, as we met online each day and posted images of our latest creations. Marthe Le Van from Lark Books compiled a book of 700 photos of rings in the project. 30 of my rings are included. The book, entitled Ring a Day: 700 Photos from a 365 day Jewelry Challenge is available for sale on Amazon. It is also available in the Monmouth County Library catalog with copies at the Atlantic Highlands branch, Ocean Township branch and at Headquarters branch. Anyone in the county can request a copy through their local branch. I'll have a few copies of the book for sale at the talk. I'll also have a few free swag bags for those who are nice enough to come! I'm looking forward to seeing you! I am proud to tell you that seven of my rings are currently on exhibit at Punch Gallery in Seattle, Washington. The show is called Ring a Day 65 artists. 1 year. 365 rings. It runs from May 5 until May 29th, 2011. This exhibit is tied in to the annual SNAG (Society of North American Goldsmiths) conference. The exhibition features 65 international artists with work ranging from ephemeral and conceptual art rings to functional jewelry in both alternative and classic materials. A slide show of my seven rings is shown above. More about the Ring a Day Project and all of the 365 rings that I made in 2010 can be found by clicking here.
